Evans' Argument and Vague Objects

چکیده

In 1978, Gareth Evans published a short and somewhat cryptic
article purporting to establish that there are no vague objects. This
paper is commentary on this. Prima facie, the claim there
objects clearly false. Mt Everest, for example, has no
precise boundaries. And if this so, must be something wrong
with Evans' argument. paper, I discuss what is, giving a
 model of in process.

Definition and implementation of vague objects ?

Vagueness occurs often in spatial information. A concept is vague if objects exist that cannot be classified either to the concept or to its complement. Vagueness arises in the presence of borderline cases. Examples are soil maps, geological maps, forestry inventories, and vegetation maps. Soil classes, or vegetation classes are such that they cannot be defined sharply. The change from one clas...

Topological Predicates Between Vague Spatial Objects

Topological predicates are an important element of database systems that allow manipulation of spatial data. Based on the necessity for such systems to handle uncertainty, we introduce a general mechanism that identifies vague topological predicates. This definition forms part of a formal data model referred to as VASA (Vague Spatial Algebra), in which the data types vague regions, vague lines,...

VAGUE RINGS AND VAGUE IDEALS

In this paper, various elementary properties of vague rings are obtained. Furthermore, the concepts of vague subring, vague ideal, vague prime ideal and vague maximal ideal are introduced, and the validity of some relevant classical results in these settings are investigated.

Logical Consistency for Vague Spatiotemporal Objects and Relations

Vagueness is often considered as an inherent property of spatiotemporal phenomena. In order to reduce this vagueness, integrity constraints should be defined to improve logical consistency of spatiotemporal databases. However, existing constraints are not adapted to control logical consistency of vague spatiotemporal objects because they are initially defined for crisp (or non–fuzzy) objects. W...

Modeling and Querying Vague Spatial Objects Using Shapelets

Research in modeling and querying spatial data has primarily focused on traditional “crisp” spatial objects with exact location and spatial extent. More recent work, however, has begun to address the need for spatial data types describing spatial phenomena that cannot be modeled by objects having sharp boundaries. Other work has focused on point objects whose location is not precisely known and...
